With the advances in equine veterinary care and technology, horses are living longer than ever. Today, older horses can live well into their twenties and very often, their thirties. A very small percentage (between 2 and 5 percent) will live into their forties.
It is natural for us, I think, to worry about our horse’s health in their golden years. Equine research studies report that 70% of horses 20 years old and older have some type of health issue requiring veterinary management and ongoing care. Here are the ten common health concerns for older horses as well as some tips that will help you keep your horse feeling comfortable in their senior years.
