We picked stalls, longed horses, filled water buckets, and swept. Then, the Hunt Seat Equitation clinic began. This was manned by Brent Maxwell and Nancy Cahill. Then, the Hunter Under Saddle clinic began. This was manned by Brent Maxwell and Charlene Carter. There was a free ride from 4:30-5:30 indoors for the USA. The clinics were very informative!

The entire $800 stakes fee goes directly into the pot for the 2017 2-Year-Old Farnam Stakes purses, and Farnam sweetens the deal by sponsoring an additional $20,000. Last year’s payout totaled $67,000. In the premier 2-year-old event, Someone Like You and trainer RJ King of Aubrey, Texas, rode away with the win and more than $10,000 of the class’ $31,500 purse.

After you have made sure your horse is sound and ready for work, begin with short conditioning sessions at the walk and trot only and mostly in straight lines and soft curves or serpentines for 20 to 30 minutes per day. This will allow your horse to build up his muscles slowly while allowing all of the horse’s muscles, tendons and ligaments to stretch. Asking a horse that is not conditioned properly to perform small, tight turns will put undue stress on under-developed muscles, tendons and ligaments and could cause injury.
