Scientists have identified nearly 300 proteins in serum and as advances are made in analytical techniques, at least double that number are likely to be discovered. Among these proteins are certain ‘bioactive proteins’ that provide beneficial functions such as antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and improved intestinal barrier function. These bioactive proteins include immunoglobulins, albumin, transferrin, bioactive peptides and growth factors, and can have a positive impact on mucosal surfaces (such as the lining of the intestine) when supplemented in diets for horses.

Abbie Crenwelge is thoughtful as she’s cruising through the night in the family’s RV, eight hours into a twenty-hour trip from their ranch in Comfort, Texas to The Buckeye Classic in Ohio. “Yes, it’s a long drive, but this is what it’s all about,” she says. “We have our kids for eighteen years, and then they’re off to college and on to their own lives. It goes by so fast. Dale and I decided, early on, that we were going to make the most of these years with the kids, and horse showing is a big part of that.”

Now, the horse world has its own wildly popular “bromance” between the newly crowned Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and his best pal, Smokey. While American Pharoah is certainly the glory boy of the duo, having become the 12th Triple Crown winner and the first since Affirmed in 1978, it’s his best bud, Smokey, who’s gaining quite a bit of attention.
