More than 200 equine veterinarians will head to the Gold Coast this weekend to learn about the latest in horse health – including infectious diseases, emerging medicines and surgery techniques as well as common horse ailments.

The conference is hosted by Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA), a special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association.

Australian horse vets will be joined by delegates from New Zealand for the week-long conference.

The program includes presentations from international experts:

· Professor Andy Durham from the new University of Surrey School of Veterinary medicine, United Kingdom will cover equine liver disease, nutrition for colic-prone horses, investigating abdominal diseases, equine metabolic syndrome and laminitis.

· Professor Jim Schumacher from the University of Tennessee, USA will present the latest techniques in reproductive surgery and wound management.

· Professor James Gilkerson, past president of EVA and Professor of Veterinary Microbiology and Director of the Centre for Equine Virology at the University of Melbourne will cover emerging equine infectious diseases, zoonoses and disease threats to Australia.

Dr Frank Condon, President of EVA said “We’re really looking forward to the conference which has become recognized worldwide as the most prominent equine veterinary conference in Australia.”

“It provides a unique opportunity for horse veterinarians to share expertise on the latest developments in equine science and veterinary practice.”

“With over 40 speakers and 40 exhibitors, it’s undoubtedly the largest gathering in the southern hemisphere dedicated to the needs of the veterinary profession,” Dr Condon said.

“And we’re also excited that for the first time EVA will partner with the Equine chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists to hold a special joint meeting during the week and share information on the latest research in equine veterinary science. Members of the group will be eligible for prizes based on the calibre of the research they present.”

EVA’s Bain Fallon conference coincides with the Year of the Horse, which, according to the Chinese zodiac, is a time of victories and action that brings results.

Bain Fallon will be held at the RACV Royal Pines Resort, Gold Coast,13-17 July. For more information visit http://www.ava.com.au/equine/continuing-professional-development/bain-fallon.
