A homemade snaffle bit featuring spikes
Friends of Marwari/Kathiawari Horse UK was founded with the intention of promoting and educating the world about these two breeds of Indian horses. Marwari and Kathiawari horses are generally found in the desert regions of India.
Due to a lack of resources and education, these horses are often ridden in home-made snaffle bits that have sharp shapes like spikes or rowels on the mouthpieces.
The Friends organization has developed a Bit Donation Program in conjunction with Indian horse traders, breeders and farmers to help educate horse owners and provide safer mouthpieces for bitting their horses.
UK Chairman Caroline Moorey says, “It is our hope that the more conventional bits we can circulate within the horse community in India, then the more chance there is of a horse or pony not going through the suffering of having a crudely filed homemade bit put in their mouth.”
The organization is asking horse owners around the world to help by donating either new or used snaffle bits with 4 1/2, 4 3/4 or 5 inch widths.
Bits donated before March will be distributed at the Balotra (Mallinath) Fair in Rajasthan, India. For more information you can go to the Friends website, or e-mail info@friendsofmarwari.org.uk
Bits can be mailed to:

Why in the WORLD would anyone use any of these bits?!?!?!?
Are there really idiots that would put such barbaric pieces into the mouths of living, breathing, beautiful animals? “Uneducated” is too polite a term! A better “suggestion” on how to “educate” these people would be to throw their stupid arses in jail with a hefty fine for cruelty to animals. That should do the trick! And perhaps they could wear their handy-work while incarcerated. I’m sure they’d learn very fast. Unbelievable! Thanks for the very informative but upsetting article. I’m gonna go smoke a pack of cigarettes now.
Blessings to those of us who treat our horses humanely and as a part of our family. What an honor to own a horse!
