This year, September 11, 2011, will mark the tenth anniversary of the horrific attacks that took place upon the United States. In addition to the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon Memorial in Virginia, Shanksville, Pennsylvania is remembered as another historic site, where the 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93 heroically sacrificed their own lives to prevent terrorists from reaching their final destination.

As of May of this year, the World Trade Center and Pentagon Memorials have been funded, however the Flight 93 Memorial is still lacking the remaining $15 million needed to finish the $60 million project.

Therefore, the Tri-State Quarter Horse Association, comprised of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, has taken it upon themselves to raise funds by holding the first-ever Flight 93 Memorial Show, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, just 45 minutes away from the site of the Flight 93 crash.

“We decided to call this show the Flight 93 Memorial Show because our shows are usually held in Greensburg, Pennsylvania,” says Brian Himes, Show Committee Chairman. “The Flight 93 crash was just about 45 minutes away from our show grounds in Shanksville. After one of our shows last year, some people drove out to the memorial site, and there was barely a memorial at all because they lacked the funds to finish it.”

“The original idea for this came from Jim Setlock, and then I decided that I would chair the event. We are going to be raising funds to give to the Flight 93 Memorial Fund, so these people can have a proper remembrance. This year will also be the 10th anniversary of the crash.”

The Flight 93 Memorial Show will take place July 20-24 at the Westmoreland Fair Grounds in Greensburg, PA. The show will be comprised of one Novice show and two split/combined shows, with a total of four sets of points. The judge for July 20th is still pending, but the judges for July 21-22 will be Daren Wright and Michelle Tidwell and the judges for July 23-24 will be Jennifer Leckey and Jessica Gilliam.

“We will be raising money through events at the horse show,” Himes says. “One of our main ones is that we are raffling off tickets for a custom two-seat golf cart that has a patriotic paint job, as well as the Flight 93 logo. All the proceeds from that will go to the Flight 93 Memorial Fund. Also, many businesses have donated items for our silent auction, like Blue Ribbon, Harris and Royal Wire. Also, a lot of corporations have donated things for class giveaways at the show. We have items to give away in almost every class.”
In addition to the silent auction and golf-cart giveaway, there are several patriotic themed events planned for the show. The youth association will be hosting a movie night, which will be held drive-in style on the side of one of the main barns. Hagan’s has generously donated all of the ice cream for this event. Also, on Saturday, July 23, there will be a Flight 93 Memorial to honor those who lost their lives in the plane crash on 9/11.
“We will be having a memorial service on Saturday before the show starts with the traditional ringing of the bell and fire trucks,” Himes says. “There will also be some media coverage between the local radio and tv stations that will be attending. Also, several county commissioners will be attending the event.”
“This will be the first year for this event and there has been a lot of talk about how big it is going to be, but we won’t really know for sure until it gets a little closer. We have received a good response and want to do everything that we can to contribute to this cause.”
Word has quickly spread about this new show, and as a result, many national corporations and even local companies have donated items to help out with the cause. Some of the major sponsors include Nutrena, Buckeye Nutrition, Harris, Blue Ribbon, SmartPak, dac, Royal Wire, The National Guard and many more.
