Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to Host Second Stop of 2010 Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting

Press Release

Some of the National Cutting Horse Association’s top horse and rider combinations will compete at the second stop of the 2010 Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting held at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The 2010 Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting is a series of eight events across the United States and Canada that draws the world’s best Open cutting horses and Non-Pro riders. Each of the World Series shows offers $25,000 in added money to both the Open and Non-Pro events for a total purse of $50,000 in Houston.

First go-rounds begin on Wednesday, March 3, and both the Open and Non-Pro finals take place in the Reliant Arena on Friday, March 5, beginning at 11 a.m. Admission is free with general grounds admission.

With its rich purses and challenging competition, the Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting brings together many of the sport’s top active horses—and even lures some out of retirement.

The draw for the Open includes horses with combined earnings of more than $7.6 million and the Non-Pro draw features six former Non-Pro World Champions.

Some of the first-round contestants include the following:

Sister CD, an 8-year-old gelding with the unlikely name, is cutting’s leading active money earner with more than $790,000 in career earnings. Last year he carried owner Elizabeth Queen, Lipan, Texas, to a Non-Pro World Championship. This year, Elizabeth’s husband, Skip, is showing him in Open competition.

Wild Hickory Bob, a 5-year-old gelding and 2007 Non-Pro Futurity Champion won the first round of the Open at San Antonio and also made the Non-Pro finals with owner, Justin White. Justin and his father, Jon, will both show the gelding in Houston.

Dual Rey Me, the three-time World Champion Open Horse comes to San Antonio just a few thousand dollars shy of Sister CD in all-time earnings. Candace Barwick, Stephenville, Texas, will show him in the Non-Pro.

Copaspepto, the 2007 NCHA Horse of the Year, will be shown in the Non-Pro by new owner Don Boone, Weatherford, Texas.

Thomas E Hughes, the NCHA World Champion Stallion of 2009, has earned more than $333,000 and is being shown by Don Boone’s wife, Kathy. Both Boones are perennial contenders in the year-end Non-Pro title races.

Non-Pro competitor Paula Wood, Stephenville, Texas, has won more than $1.5 million. She and her mare Donas Cool Cat won the first stop of the Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting in San Antonio in February with a career best score of 226-points.
