An 8-month-old filly was found shot in the head late Sunday morning at 72 ranch in Parker County, Texas.

Authorities believe that the filly was shot at close range by a high powered rifle.

Ranch owner Kris Larsen said she can’t imagine why someone would do such a thing to an animal, let alone an 8 month-old foal. The filly, aptly named Bald Faced-Lie, was by Larsen’s cutting horse stallion Light N Lena and out of a Freckles Playboy mare named Playboys Special Copy.

Larsen said that out of all of her foals born last year, this particular filly was the most distinctively marked and very gentle.

“She was a really pretty filly with a big bald face and four white socks,” Larsen said. “She was really personable. I weaned her a little earlier than the others, and she kind of became a pet because she was the  littlest one. We hand fed her a lot and gave her alot of attention. I think she proabably walked right up to the person who shot her.”

The filly’s approximated value was said to be $20,000. Larsen had sold a full brother to the filly for $25,000, and currently has another full brother in training for 3-year-old futurity events this fall.

“The mare had five colts in a row,” Larsen said. “We were really excited that this was her first filly.”

She had been turned out with 14 other yearling fillies in a pasture about 30 yards from the nearest road. Why the shooter singled this particular filly is still unknown.

“I still have the letter from AQHA sitting on my desk, requesting photos for her registration,” Larsen said.

She said that the police and news crews arrived again early this morning and are still gathering more evidence. At this time, she said that the police are doing a lot of work measuring different areas of the pasture to determine exactly where the shots were fired from.

“Sheriff Fowler is determined to get this guy,” Larsen said. “He has been unbelievable.”

Also, the recent outpouring of support from the community and even complete strangers has taken Larsen by surprise.

“I am overwhelmed by the fact that complete strangers are calling and offering to donate money for the reward,” she said. “Just today I had five people I didn’t know, call and want to donate money. I think this has definitely affected a lot of people.”

Larsen posted the reward at $1,000, and because the shooting is being featured as the Parker County Crime of the Week, the crime stoppers are matching that amount to make the reward $2,000.

  • Larsen, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope that you find whosoever did this terrrible deed, sometimes I just wonder what drives some people. I looked at the pictures and the way in which is was done, three people, male one female in background, recheck the crime scene in a greater radius, random – maybe not. If you have another pic to post that would help.Be strong, youre being sent blessings from the UK
