Some owners find their mares to be moody, fussy, flighty or stubborn. Others say they are loving, loyal, committed and reliable. What is the real story?
Betsy Kelleher’s MARES! (Ya Gotta LOVE’ em): Fifty Stories to Aid and Inspire Mare Owners ($23.99, paperback, 978-1-60477-547-1) is a collection that delves into the unique personalities of different mares, but it’s about women, too, and the essence of being female. It’s about a strong need for connection, love and acceptance. Mares often require special handling before their best side is evident. Kelleher presents the true stories that explain how and why this is so.
Learn about “Territorial Mares” from Julie Goodnight and “Gender Training” from Dr. Ron Meredith, and share the experiences of 37 other mare owners. Glimpse treasured moments between horse and human as they learn together, sharing the struggle and joy of building trust, respect and mutual dependence. Realize the profound love that can exist between two separate beings. From joy of birth to anguish of loss, this book is a source of inspiration, love and healing.
“Readers will gain a new perspective from this book,” Kelleher says. “Like women, mares just want to be treated with respect and loving kindness. Those who love them know they are amazing creatures with the capacity to give their all.”
Growing up on an Iowa Farm, Kelleher’s first horse was a Percheron mare from her grandfather’s work team. She later owned a mare that resulted in her first book, Sometimes a Woman Needs a Horse. This book was awarded First Runner-Up in the Legacy Nonfiction category of the 2009 Eric Hoffer Awards.
Kelleher has owned seven mares and eight geldings. She also writes a regular column for the Illinois Horse Network newspaper.
